Tai-tais for a day

I met an old JC friend for tea today. She's currently on maternity leave and I'm bumming so we pretended to be tai-tais for an afternoon. :)

I was rather surprised by her email invite cos Mandy and I were never really the closest in the group back in JC. There was about 5 of us back then, a nice mix of KC & IJ girls, and we all got along fabulously, albeit a little squabbling here and there. It was just that the group dynamics meant that Mandy and I were closer to other people than to each other. Truth be told, I was always a little intimidated by her cos she was very direct and a little sharp.

Over the years, the group drifted away, literally. Diane settled down in Melbourne, as did Liz in Perth, with their other halves. Dell has been working in the States for a while now, so it's been Gen, Mandy and me left in Singapore. The three of us try to meet up, but what with our schedules and lives, we were only successful twice in the past 4 years. Kinda pathetic, huh?

So when Mandy suggested that we meet up for coffee, I was surprised but yet delighted to catch up and strengthen this friendship.

We met at Menotti and has a wonderful late afternoon coffee together. We spoke about work, our lives, our other halves and almost anything. Picked up quite a few good tips about organising a wedding from her as well! It was a very pleasant afternoon and I was almost regretful when it was time to leave.

I guess we never really had the chance to have a heart-to-heart talk, so it was really good to hear what she felt about work, the rat race we find ourselves constantly in, etc. Back in JC, I would never have thought that Mandy and I felt the same about so many things. The thing which really struck me was when she asked if we would ever become working tai-tais and meet each other for tea in the middle of a working day while our subordinates slogged back in the office. I really understood her on that one - man, that would be sheer bliss!

Sadly enough, we might only get to catch up again in Oct when Dell comes back, because Mandy is starting work again next week and with 2 kids, she pretty much has her hands full to meet up after work.

I'm really glad though that we had this afternoon together.

And I simply have to add this: for a working mother of 2 kids, Mandy looks amazing. Wonderful figure, clear skin, bright smile, great hair... I have no idea how she does it but va-va-voom, that's my Yummy Mummy girlfriend!
