Familia

Yesterday was Dad' birthday and our traditional family dinner took a twist when the parents invited the FILs for a particularly elaborate 8-course dinner. (Yes, obviously still in "we have to impress each other" mode)

Although we had done the initial meet-up session already, the Boyfriend and I were still a little bit nervous over last night's meeting. Our dads, being men, are fine but my mum has a fussy, sensitive streak while his mum is a rare combination of sensitive and a tad bit tactless.

Surprisingly though, dinner went off without a hitch and as the evening progressed, it became clearer that the two of us weren't needed for the conversation to flow. Amidst the copious amount of beer and stout consumed, the two sets of parents loosened up more than during the initial meeting and got along pretty well.

Back home, the Boyfriend and I compared notes and concluded with relief that, indeed our parents could be friends with one another. I'm really glad that we took the route of letting them get to know each other first before any marriage plans. In future, when the asinine matters of which grandfather to name our first-born son after or which set of parents gets to live with us while the other set gets sent off to a nursing home crops up, at least they have some foundation of friendship to fall back on.
